Play Up / Down Guidelines

PLAY UP REQUESTS

Region 74 assigns players to divisions based on their date of birth. In certain circumstances, the Region may allow a player to play up a division. Requests for a player to play up to the next division will be considered on an individual basis.

General Guidelines:

Requests to play up must be approved in writing by the Regional Commissioner.
Region 74 will not automatically recognize Play Ups granted by other AYSO Regions.
Requests will only be considered if space is available in the higher division.
The player must miss the cutoff date for the next age division by no more than 6 months.
Requests to Play Up that are accompanied by a parent or guardian volunteering to coach are more likely to be granted. The coach must complete the necessary coaching requirements - volunteer application, background check, Safe Haven, Concussion Awareness, Sudden Cardiac, Safe Sport, and division specific AYSO Coach Certification/Training.
We will only consider requests for a player who misses the cutoff date by more than 6 months if the player's parent or guardian coaches the team. The coach must complete the necessary coaching requirements - volunteer application, background check, Safe Haven, Concussion Awareness, Sudden Cardiac, Safe Sport, and division specific AYSO Coach Certification/Training.

Once a request has been approved, the parent or guardian must complete & sign the "play up" waiver for the placement to be made.

Our Region does not honor the following reasons for playing-up:

Player wants to play with friends in his/her class or grade level.
Player wants to play with players in his/her neighborhood.
Player is too big or too tall to play at his/her current level.

PLAY DOWN REQUESTS

AYSO National Guidelines DO NOT permit players to 'play down' into a younger division. Players are assigned to divisions based on their date of birth. The ONLY exception may be granted if a player has a doctor's note indicating a medical condition. For more information, please contact [email protected].
